7:01am
In this big isolated city, it's hardly impossible for one to fall in love at first sight. Nobody bothers to look around and scrutinise the surroundings and even smile at strangers. People on the streets always walk with a destination in mind. Sometimes, you never know that the one who brush gently across your shoulder will be your only one. No one can predict their future. That's why we might just miss the one person we could truly love. For Dan, it was an unexpected ploy of fate. Love always struck at the weirdest places.
Dan was a journalist and he was very contented being single. He firmly believed that being in a relationship was a large commitment and that he just was not ready for that. In truth, it was not that he did not want to have a relationship but he cooped himself too much at home to interact with the world, as was required by his job. His life is a repeated routine. Every Saturday, he would reach the bus-stop at exactly 7:01am and take a bus at 7:05am to get to the newspaper distributors to submit his work. Being a disciplined man, Dan ensured that every week was the exact same routine. He fears disorganisation. However, that will soon all change.
It was a typical Saturday. Yet, the clouds were unusually blue and the sun was abnormally gentle. The gust of wind gently blowing at his ear, seemed to giggle. Of course, Dan did not take into notice all these strange happenings. Deep down, he had a hunch that something was going to happen so he was extra meticulous that day. By 7:01am, he reached that particular bus-stop. Suddenly, an extra weight crashed into him and he felt air whooshing out of his lungs as he collapsed heavily on the ground. A light wave of nauseous came over him and he struggled to get up. As he tried to grab a hold of something, he could only grasped something soft, like a woman's skin. A woman!!
His eyes adjusted to the glare of the sun. Looking down at his chest, behold, there was really a woman! Shocked speechless, he could only openly gawk as her eyelashes fluttered and emerald eyes met his sapphire ones. The lady was the first to break the awkward staring as she soon discovered her state of embarrassment and blushed a rosy red. Picking herself up, she offered a hand to her saviour. A soft murmur of "sorry" escaped from her pouty lips and she made her way to one corner of the bus-stop. Transfixed and mesmerised, Dan could not help himself but kept sparing glances to the beautiful stranger.
Her long auburn hair cascaded all the way down to her hip and her bangs covered her forehead. Not to mention the big emerald jewels, otherwise as known as eyes, with long curled eyelashes that framed the jewels. The dainty nose. The pouty lips. The petite figure. Everything about her just seemed to be so perfect. He did not halt the staring until she boarded a bus. Heaving a sigh of disappointment, he checked his watch. To his utmost horror, he was bloody missed his bus! It was 7:15am already. That day, he broke his routine and hailed a cab.
The subsequent months was both bittersweet and exhausting. He harboured a major crush for that beautiful stranger. Now, he would go down to the bus-stop every single day, not just on Saturdays, just to catch a glimpse of his angel. And everyday, he learnt something about her. Like how she loves to let down her hair and not tie it. Or how much she loves flowers especially white roses. She loves animals too, always giving stray cats and dogs a part of her breakfast. Her clothes always consists of a long flowing skirt and most importantly, she loves to read. There was never a day she left the house without a book. Then, one day, he got tired from all the admiring and decided to make a move.
He succeeded! She had agreed to go out on a date with him. The date was perfect. She was everything he ever imagined. After the date, she too, confessed that she would love to go out with him more. The infatuation grew into something more. Something called love. That something was Dan's taboo. Yet, he embraced it with both arms. He was willing to break his taboo for that girl. Their relationship seen years and was still unbreakable. Until that day when he finally proposed to her, she rejected him outright and left the restaurant, tears welling in her eyes. Dan's heart shattered. The ache in his heart was like daggers harshly and softly killing him.
He never saw her again. Not at the bus-stop. Nor could she be reached on her phone. It was like she never happened before in Dan's life. However, Dan persevered and finally, he had news about her. He met her roommate. When she saw him, she broke down in tears. She led him into her room. Stunned, he stood rooted to the floor. All around the room was their photographs taken during the dates. Yet, the room seemed eerily untouched for a very long time. That was when he started questioning her whereabouts and the roommate burst, "She's dead. She had cancer and that's why she rejected your proposal. She loved you a lot".
He could no longer hear anything. Nor feel anything. Numbed, he went back to his apartment. He laid on his bed, unaware of anything. Unaware that his watch had ran out of battery and the time is 7:01am.
"Will you die for me?"
